Children and Young People’s ADHD & Autism Preliminary Diagnostic Assessment

We are here to support you and/or your Child/ Young Person throughout your journey with us. We appreciate that understanding the nature of your or your Child/ Young Person’s differences can be a challenging and confusing experience. This is why we provide a Preliminary Diagnostic Assessment. Within this assessment, we screen for a range of difficulties, including ASC, ADHD, Depression and Anxiety which is supplemented through information gathered through a detailed developmental history interview. This enables us to provide you with some early diagnostic clarification and these preliminary assessments enable us to determine whether a full diagnostic assessment is the most appropriate pathway for you or your Child/ Young Person.

As Parents/ Carers of the Child/ Young Person, we will ask you to fill out some questionnaires/ measures and return these to us before your appointment.

How your Child/ Young Person manages at School is also very important for us to understand. With your consent, we will send their Teacher and/or SENCo some questionnaires to complete as well as asking them specific questions about your Child/ Young Person’s strengths and challenges within this area of their life.

You and your Child/ Young Person will be invited to an appointment to meet with our Consultant Clinical Psychologist, who will focus upon gathering a detailed developmental history as well as gaining an understanding of challenges that the Child/ Young Person is experiencing.

Within this assessment, we will be screening for the presence of features of ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Anxiety Disorders and Depression.

At the end of this preliminary assessment, we will be able to advise you as to whether a full diagnostic assessment for ADHD is appropriate for your Child/Young Person or alternatively, if there may be other factors which better explain the difficulties your Child/Young Person is experiencing.

If ADHD is not indicated, then we will provide recommendations for the most appropriate therapeutic interventions as well as support options.

If ADHD is indicated, then you will be given information about supporting your Child/Young Person to continue to our Full Diagnostic ADHD Service.
